There are many opportunities to learn about Chemistry and/or be tutored on the subject outside of the classroom. One way to help yourself out is through learning and reinforcing what you have learned through the internet.
Otras
Escuelas
("other schools" en
espaņol, these sites made by other schools can come in handy,
after all, they're studying the same exact stuff!)
- the criteria of this site, although somewhat
varied from Whitney's, is valuable. One may be able to get
some help in the earlier segments of the school year, such as in nomenclature
(recognizing the names, symbols, and charges of commomly-used
elements and polyatomic ions on sight) and the mole (the
standard method in chemistry for communicating how much of a
substance is present).
- so much useful information,
you'd think that they teach their course off of the web!
Higher
Learning
(these sites are affiliated
with select universities across the nation)
- although tutoring services won't be available to
any of us (assuming none of us can get to Maryland and back
within a few hours), this site run on Towson University webspace
provides a few in-depth description of Chemistry Basics.
-
perhaps a little too advanced for Whitney-ites, this
college-based reference page may provide something for us,
at least on the very basic knowledge of Chemistry.
Queries/Search
Engines/Reference
(ask about or look up any random Chemistry-related material)
- Need to know what a formula (for example,
"HCl") means, what it's found in, and more, check out
this site.
Bill's Chemistry Tutor Homepage - Ask Bill a question about Chemistry, (almost anything) and he'll find the answer to it.
Eric's Treasure Trove of Chemistry - look up anything that has to do with Chemistry, from A to Z!
A
Darn-Good-Lookin Site
- the best looking site related to Chemistry on
the Web, perhaps the most useful too. Provides information
and guides for all the fundamentals; an online textbook.
Amateur-but-Worthy
Ventures
(sites that are made by
amateur webmasters, but are definitely worth checkin' out)
- Don't get Sig
Figs? Troubled by Mr. Mole? If so, check this site
out for long-sought-after answers and more!
- Nearly a step-by-step walk-through of Sophomore
Chemistry! We were initially amazed @ the similarity of Mr.
Bender's course's and this site's content.
- the web's
very own version of Mr. Bender, Mr. Guch's Cavalcade o'
Chemistry, provides a lot of information about course
materials and a bunch of other stuff that is of no use for
Whitney-ites (mostly because it's for students that are taking his
course).
Chem Tutor - covers the fundamentals of Chemistry and is still growing.
Online
Professional Tutoring Opportunities
(to take advantage of these sites, your
parents'll have to whip out the 'ol checkbook)
- this company, despite being based in
Florida, is able to give high-schoolers "the most effective
and fastest techniques" for "total preparation for
exams." The rates may be higher ($30 per hour)
than local opportunities ($5-10 per hour), but the quality one
may find can more than make up for the difference.
- available both in person and over the
internet, My Tutor provides tutoring opportunities for an
extensive variety of subjects. The rates range from $30 for
1 student per hour to $50 for 4 students per hour.
